Banksy

Did I talk to you about Banksy???

He's the most famous Bristolian graffiti artist. He's much debated because he's a political activist, his art is engagé and subversive, using sometimes some slogans anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment.

At some point, it's really annoying because he is from Bristol and here, it's like Banksy here, Banksy there... According to the Bristolian, he's THE only artist from that city...They're so proud about him... But what he does is still good...

" Banksy is the pseudonym of a British graffiti artist, political activist and painter, whose identity is unconfirmed. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling  technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.
[...]

Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. He became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s. Observers have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
[...]
Banksy started as a freehand graffiti artist 1992–1994[13] as one of Bristol's DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ), with Kato and Tes. He was inspired by local artists and his work was part of the larger Bristol underground scene.
[...]
Banksy's stencils feature striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment. Subjects often include rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly. "

Lately, Banksy has created a controversial title sequence for The Simpsons.
The storyboard was apparently inspired by reports the show outsources the bulk of their animation to a company in South Korea.

New Orleans, August 2010

The true story about the New Orleans

After a wonderful week in Chicago, full of surprises, I'm now on my way to the New Orleans, instead of S.F., I changed my mind at the last minute (no regrets about that).
Two flights later and one stop to Charlotte , I'm landing to New Orleans.
Temperature on the ground close to 40°C, Humidity close to 80%, I can barely breath.
It doesn't really mater, I'm on holidays.
I take a bus from the airport, one hour later, I finally reach the hostel.

This place, the India House Backpackers Hostel, is a proper architectural house from the New Orleans.
Really friendly place, always messy, a bar, a swimming pool, full of drunkers...The kind of place that I'm going to like.

So now lets talk about the real story of that week.
This start with a pretty rough week in Chicago and before that, a rough time at work in UK.
Basically I need some rest and some good time, New Orleans is going to be the perfect place for that.
Like I said, the weather was really warm and because it's too warm, you just want to do nothing.
So what I did during that week is laying down by the pool, drinking, the pool, meeting and talking to people, drinking...Happy days.

This is what I'm talking about...

Well, New Orleans is still a very nice place to visit, so beautiful, people are really friendly over there.
Even if Katrina fucked everything, down-town is still amazing. Good food, I ate some alligator, really nice, good music as well (the jazz of New Orleans).
But that is the thing, when you leaving the center, the whole suburb is fucked up, like a no man's land because hurricane.
I said that I did nothing but it's not really true, I went in town every night.
You need to know something about that city. It's a really small town, so there is not a lot of things to do.
There is the French quarter, which is down-town and...euh that's it... I told you.
About the parties, two places.
The first one, Bourbon street, a trap for tourists, it's full of shit. Some crappy bars and nigtht clubs.
There is no need to spend time there.
On the other hand, the place to be is Frenchmen street. Loads of nice jazz clubs, bars and restaurants to enjoy night life. Underground and emptiness of tourists (is that correct????).
An amazing time, I saw a guy in a jazz club, he played three guitars at the same time. One bass guitar on his feet, one electric guitar on the right side and one a the left side...Just unbelievable.
So yeah I had a really good time with nice people, a lot of parties, always sunny except the last day, just when I took all the pictures of that city...
This is why I'm going to call this album "New Orleans by rain"...

Pat & The Liquor Boxx

During my trip in Chicago, I met via my friend Nat, millions of nice and interesting people.
Some tattoo artists, DJs, sailors, musicians,...long is the list.

But I met, in particular that guy, which is the flatmate of my friend.
Let me tell you more about him.

Patrick
The artist

That guy called Patrick from Chicago, is the most interesting artist that I ever met.
He is a very brilliant guitarist. I saw him played some Hendrix to the perfection. I had the occasion to see him playing some really nice Blues, obviously he's from Chicago, so the Blues music, he's got this in his blood.
What I liked about Pat, is that he is very laid back, open minded, clever and he can talk about everything. He knows a lot about the history of Chicago, about the history of the music, especially the Blues and the Jazz. He can talk to you for hours about for the Blues of Chicago, which is really interesting. He used to live as well for a while in New Orleans, so he knows a lot about the Jazz over there (and he gave me loads of advices about New Orleans, cf. next post).
Really nice guy...
As a guitarist, he's a part of a band called "Liquor Boxx".

Liquor Boxx
The Band

That trip was the occasion for me to discovering different things such as music, films, paintings...
For now lets be focused on music and this band Liquor Boxx.
I did not have the chance to see them in live but through Patrick, I discovered their music.
They're from Chicago and as they're saying, they're playing a "SEXY ASS ROCK MUSIC".
They're influences are the Blues, Rock, Alternative...
They likes to call themselves for fun the "Zeppendrix Vaughn", the spiritual sons of Led Zep, Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Everything is said in that last sentence...

Don't forget to check their Myspace and/or Facebook for more informations and musics -->Myspace / Facebook

I selected for you two of their tracks...Enjoy!!!

Chicago, August 2010

This year, I've been working really hard and for only one thing...To pay myself some awesome holidays...So I did it.
My destination : USA, for a month.
I was really excited and at the same time, really scared about going there on my own...
My only fellow trip would be my backpack...
But at the end, everything went well...
I had an amazing time, met a lot of great people (tell you more about them later),
saw millions of beautiful things...Such a nice experience.
I would recommended it.

Sat, 15th of august 2010, 4am, I am on my way to Bristol airport.
First stop in US, Chicago, the lovely "Windy City"...
But before that, 3 stops and 16 hours trip...Bristol, to Amsterdam, to Detroit, to Chicago.
My first step on the American soil was in Detroit..and what an adventure. I spent about 1 hour with the immigration authorities. The agent was not really friendly and smiley. Such a dickhead..Whatever..

Eventually I got to my final destination, Chicago my love...
So far, I would say that Chicago is my favourite city in US.
It's beautiful, very clean, wonderful monuments, very cultural and multi- ...
Lot of things to do there, very nice music scene (THE famous Blues of Chicago), good pubs and night clubs...
Open minded and friendly people...In short, awesome.

While I was there, I went to the Sears Tower. It's a really good spot to see the whole town, an amazing view.
At the top of that tower, there is a scary thing, you can actually step outside the tallest building in the western hemisphere and the third tallest in the world. At 412 meters in the air, the ledge’s glass box extend out 1.3 meter from Skydeck. There's nothing but space under your feet.

I went to see as well a Cub's game (Thanks Nat for that), Chicago's baseball team.
I'm not really into that thing but that was funny to see and share a moment like this with people and it's the most popular game there.

There is another thing that I really enjoyed, that was my trip on a boat on the lake Michigan, very cool, I mean at the beginning, after a while I was sick...But still a real nice time...

Right, it's time to stop talking...

See the beauty of Chicago with this link…

More photos to come about my trip,
To be continued...
